We are grandparents!!!!

Last Saturday I got to hold my oldest baby's baby. (happy dance)

Born at 8:25 p.m. Friday

Auburn brown hair, healthy & so tiny

I can't believe how good being a father looks on Michael.

He's a natural.

Rebekah was tired so I'll catch a good picture of her in a few days! I think she had a great excuse!

My heart just melted watching Steve meet his granddaughter. (I think his melted too.)

There are no words that I can say that express the joy we have over meeting this precious gift.

And baby . . . makes 3

How do I know summer is here?

1. The school day is becoming very laid back. These are our only requirements

Practice piano
Read
Chores
Study Bible verses
Swim or play games
Go outside

3. Even Library trips are "different"

Sometimes we will do the summer reading program at our public library. Often we have our own summer program. This is the one I'm going to use this year. If you would like to use it too just click on the graphic to get the free printable!

Each week before we go to the library I am going to give this "assignment" sheet to my kids. When we are there they pick out books from each of the categories.

If they skip a category? Well I think that's ok.

If they get obsessed with one topic? Like Beethoven, Rome or bacteria?

Well I think that's ok too.

Really it is that simple

It gives kids some loose guidance during the freedom of summer to keep learning & growing.

Well I was going to share how my garden was doing today. I seriously considered not doing that because it is really been an yucky week.

Hay in place and ground is ready for plants!

The deep mulch of hay on the garden to keep the weeds from getting out of hand was in place. We were ready to plant tomatoes & peppers! I got most of them in the ground. I knew it was going to rain so that seemed like a great thing to have gotten done!

And then it started raining . . . .and it really never stopped.

This weekend

I started to dig canals to direct the water away from the plants.

Did I mention I planted 30 tomato plants???

Yeah I ran out of steam before I was done. Steve helped and then Joshua helped to finish it up.

I think he actually had a blast playing in the mud.

So far this week things are drying out! I can't wait to see some sunshine again and be able to plant the rest of the plants & seeds for our Garden Plan for 2015.

**Update on August 1** The canals saved the tomatoes! We have green plants and lots of little green tomatoes. I think we are 2-3 weeks behind "schedule" which means the harvest is coming! I'm just glad the plants survived the "flood"

Gardening without work: How to get rid of weeds

The excitement of spring and planting the seeds and seedlings is over. We are in the long haul of August and the summer garden. I won’t kid you. It’s NOT easy to do a garden in the late summer.

It’s hot. The bugs seem to be winning. The weeds have not given up the war. But I am winning against the weeds in the garden!

I think that ORANGE is the color that I associate most with fall. Pumpkins and beautiful trees that turn flaming orange are my favorite orange things of autumn. This year we had an amazing pumpkin plant that climbed the fence and hung it's fruit 4 feet in the air!!!

What we have learned in 3 years about how to grow raspberries

I've always wanted a berry patch. Strawberries aren't too bad to purchase but others can cost an arm and a leg! We've had vegetables gardens and flower gardens but never a berry patch. In our current home we've had the fun adventure of creating a patch that has given us good return! Not quite where we don't need to buy any berries but that is my ultimate goal! We are 3 years in to this adventures and I want to share our tips for growing raspberries learned from our good and bad experiences.
