Flowers for an All-Season and Low Maintenance Perennial Flower Garden

Have you ever planted a perennial plant? Perennial means that the plant comes back year after year. Often perennials are low maintenance and cost less in the long run! A low maintenance flower garden is the BEST kind of of garden!

Sunny and Shady perennial flower gardens

At our last home I created a shady perennial flower bed over several years and when we moved it was hard to leave all my little friends growing happily in their places! But now we live on several acres and I have almost too much room for flowers.

The previous owner started a large sunny bed that is full of lilies, purple coneflower, iris, peonies and more! Over the last couple of years, I’ve been filling a smaller flower bed that has a butterfly bush, black eyed susans and yarrow.

Building perennial beds is a marathon activity not a sprint. Perennials cost more initially so instead of buying lots of annuals for a few dollars you are more likely to buy 1 or 2 larger plants that cost a bit more. BUT they come back every year so you don’t have to keep investing money in plants for that spot every year.

Starting a perennial flower garden

You don’t need a horticulture or design degree to start a perennial flower bed.

Seriously. Decide what colors you like or even choose a few plants that you like the shape of to start with OR do what I do and visit the clearance section of your local Lowe’s or Home Depot after a storm occurs in your area.

You will find plants that look a little sad but if you plant them and give them some care next year they will reward you for your effort! Remember marathon not sprint!
